What makes a great vocal coach?
There is a common stereotype that singing teachers are just performers who didn’t quite make it elsewhere, but that couldn’t be further from the truth for those of us who truly love what we do. For me, teaching isn’t a ‘plan B’ — it is a genuine passion. A great coach is someone who shows up for their students every single week, fully invested in seeing them excel.
The foundation of great coaching is creating a safe, supportive space. Singing is incredibly personal; you are your instrument, and that can feel very vulnerable. A brilliant coach knows how to hype up their students, building their confidence while they navigate the technical side of their craft. It isn’t just about the degrees or diplomas on the wall; it’s about the experience, the caring quality they bring to the room, and how they adapt to each individual voice.
Passion is the big one. You can feel when a teacher is genuinely excited to help you hit that high note or master a tricky riff. When a coach is passionate about the anatomy and the biology of the voice as well as the performance side, it gives the student a much deeper understanding of their own ability. A great coach doesn’t just teach you songs — they teach you how to understand and love your own unique instrument.
Ultimately, a great vocal coach is a mentor who balances high standards with a huge amount of heart. They are there to challenge you, yes, but they are also there to catch you if you stumble and celebrate every single win with you. That connection and trust are what make the difference between a good lesson and a life-changing one.
