What is the best age to start singing lessons?
The question of when to start singing is one I get asked all the time by parents, and my answer is always the same: there is no single right age for everyone, but there is a perfect time for you. Whether you are looking for your child or you are thinking about starting yourself as an adult, the voice is an instrument that we can develop at almost any stage of life.
If you are looking at lessons for a child, I usually find that five or six years old is a brilliant age to start. At this stage, children are starting to develop the focus needed for a one-to-one session, and their relationship with music is so joyful and open. Starting young helps build a foundation of confidence and basic musicality that stays with them forever. We keep things fun, engaging, and age-appropriate, focusing on the joy of singing while gently introducing the basics of how the voice works.
But honestly, aside from that starting point for children, there truly is no 'best' age. I have a huge range of students in my studio, from six-year-olds finding their voice for the first time to a seventy-year-old student who has just started as a complete beginner. Seeing an adult begin later in life and find real enjoyment and progress is just as rewarding as watching a child grow.
The beauty of the voice is that it grows and changes with you. For younger students, we navigate the changes that come with growing up, and for adults we work with the voice you have now to make it stronger, more reliable, and more expressive. It is never too late to start, and you are never too old to learn a new skill or find a new passion.
The best age to start is simply whenever you feel that spark of interest. Whether you are five or seventy, if you want to learn to sing, the best time to start is right now. It is all about the dedication you bring to it and the enjoyment you get out of it, rather than the number of candles on your birthday cake.
