What to Expect at Your First Dance Lesson

Whether this is your first-ever dance lesson or you've had a few before, your first session is about two things: getting to know you, and seeing how your body moves. How the lesson looks will depend on whether it's a private one-to-one or a group class - here's what you can expect in each.

Private lessons

For a first private lesson I start with a relaxed conversation. I want to know why you want this lesson and what you want to get out of it - whether that's technique, competition work, audition prep or simply learning a style you love. That helps me explain what I can offer and tailor the session to you.

We'll begin with a gentle movement warm-up and a short stretch so I can see how you move naturally. This tells me what comes easily and what needs attention. From there, I'll teach a short combination in the style you want to work on - musical theatre, lyrical, contemporary, street, jazz, ballet, tap, or even Irish step. If you're focused on technical elements (turns, balance, footwork), we'll put time into that; if you have an audition or competition piece, we'll work on the choreography, notes and performance quality right away.

If something needs creating - an audition routine or a competition piece - I can choreograph that for you and help you polish it. The lesson might cover technique, learning new material, or refining a performance; whatever your aim, the plan is to finish with a clear next step for your practice.

Group classes

In a group setting the structure is similar but more communal. We'll start with a group warm-up and stretch, then learn a combination together. Group classes are brilliant for learning musicality, timing, and performance skills in a supportive environment. They're also a great place to build confidence, make friends and learn to perform with others.

Kindness and patience

You're meeting a new teacher, and that can feel daunting. Be gentle with yourself - this is a learning process. I always hope students have fun, learn something, and don't beat themselves up. Give yourself grace; we're all learning.

Practical details

Wear clothes you can move in and bring a bottle of water. If you're coming to a private lesson, arrive a few minutes early if you can so you're settled and ready. For children, I'll speak with parents afterwards; for adults, I encourage you to take a few days to think about whether you want to continue. Don't rush your decision or say yes in the moment if you're unsure - take your time and email me when you've decided.

End of lesson

At the end of the lesson we'll have a short chat about how it felt. I'll suggest achievable next steps and, if appropriate, practice tasks or combinations to work on. If you're preparing for an audition or competition, I'll give focused feedback and a clear plan to help you improve.

Final thoughts

Whatever your reason for dancing - joy, fitness, performance or progression—I'll meet you where you are and help you grow with kindness and clarity. Dance should be rewarding and fun, and your first lesson is the beginning of that journey.
