Can You Become a Singer Without Any Formal Training?
I get asked this quite often, and my answer is: yes, yes, yes, a million times yes! You absolutely can become a singer without formal training. The world is full of incredible voices who never sat through a traditional graded exam or spent years in a conservatory. If you have a passion for music and a drive to share your voice, that is the most important starting point.
In today’s world, we are so lucky because there are so many brilliant resources available at our fingertips. If you aren't in a position where you can get to weekly singing lessons right now, you can still learn so much online. From technical tips on YouTube to digital worksheets and anatomy breakdowns, you can start honing your craft right where you are. If you are constantly working at it, listening critically, and practicing your favorite songs, you are becoming a singer.
The only real "missing piece" when you don't have formal training is that personal rapport and direct feedback. When you work with a coach, you get someone who can listen to your specific instrument and give you immediate notes on things like placement, breathing, or tension that you might not notice yourself. It’s that second pair of ears - the assessment and the "hype" - that helps you grow much faster and ensures you are looking after your vocal health.
So, while lessons are a wonderful tool to speed up your progress and keep your voice safe, they aren't a "barrier to entry." If you love to sing, keep singing! Work your craft, use the resources available to you, and trust your unique sound. Whether you are self-taught or professionally trained, your voice is yours to share with the world.
If you ever feel like you'd like that extra bit of guidance, we always offer trial lessons at Stand Out Performing Arts for half price (£9.50 for 30 minutes) so you can see if it’s for you. There is absolutely no pressure to book a full term right away; I always encourage new students to take a few days after their trial to think about it and make sure it’s the right fit for them.
